Stenciled J-21 tags were cut from two fuselage access panels from an ex-Yugoslavian Air Force SOKO J-21 Jastreb. The stenciled tags are particularly interesting because the markings were written in Serbian using the Latin alphabet—something not often seen in an air force closely aligned with the Eastern Bloc, where stencils were usually written in Cyrillic. Another interesting feature of the stenciled tags is that, many are bicolored!
J-21 Jastreb was a single-seat, single-engine attack aircraft developed by the SOKO company in Yugoslavia during the 1960s. In parallel with the general belief of many air forces of that era—that major air bases would be destroyed or put out of action in the early stages of a war—the J-21 was built with a short landing gear design, enabling it to operate from smaller, less prepared, and even unpaved runways. Not during the Cold War, but right after it, the J-21 saw extensive combat during the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) between 1991 and 2001.
The J-21 Jastreb is the first release in the “Yugoslav Wars Series” of FIGHTERTAGS. This series will consist of six aircraft releases that saw combat during the wars leading to the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) in the 1990s. Releasing “tag series” is a new approach by FIGHTERTAGS to tag collecting, focusing not only on the aircraft type but also on the shared history behind these aircraft.
